LeRoy Neiman is at ease with many media. Most of his early years were spent painting and drawing. He explored a number of art-in-multiples techniques, but was not entirely satisfied with the first results.  His tentative experiments with monotypes and lithographs in the 1950s and 60s were followed by his passionate love affair with serigraphs in the 1970s. The technique of serigraphy made his sensuously controlled explosions of color available to a very wide audience. It was not until he had published over a hundred limited editions of serigraphs in an orgy of painterly creativity that he begun to feel an attraction for the firm discipline of the etcher's art. His first etchings were done as learning experiments in Switzerland during 1971. The methodology intrigued him. In 1972, he produced several suites of sports subjects - baseball, skiing, hockey, basketball and boxing. During those early years he worked with various techniques that ranged from aquatint to hand pulled photo-etching. Then he set the etching process aside for a few years. Late in 1975, he felt the itch to etch again. He bought his own press, and set it up in his New York studio. From that point on, Neiman's etchings started to become deeply personal expressions. The first suite off the press was a series of nudes, followed by moving studies of people and animals working together in a special kind of natural harmony. the period between 1977 and 1978 marks the mature development of Neiman's work as an etcher. Since that time all of his etchings have been worked on the various metals in his etching studio. Each image originated as a direct line drawing through a hard ground which was then etched. After the first state proof is pulled, Neiman usually reworks the plate using such techniques as aquatint, dry point, and scraping. Each time the plate is reworked, a state proof is pulled until the artist is satisfied with the image. All of the impressions for each edition are then inked and hand pulled by his printer under Neiman's direction in the etching studio.
"The Game of Life", is a provocative allegory, and a masterpiece of etching, where representatives from every corner of the Planet Earth gather together around the spinning of the roulette wheel. Early in 1980, Neiman decided to devote a great deal of his time to etching. The results have been impressive. This year also marks the publication of his first major Limited Edition of his etchings since 1972. This portfolio edition enclosed contains the following ten etchings: Dalmatian, Six Nudes,
Bovine Family, Midnight Cheetah, Rodeo, Soccer, Daily Double, Into the Open, The Game of Life, Stud Poker. Each etching consists of 250 impressions with 40 artist's proofs. The range of Neiman's subject matter in this edition is considerable, from studies of animals and nudes to the active drama of sporting events and gambling tables.

The premium wines he has chosen for this piece are among Napa’s finest, and set the tone for a first-rate experience to follow. Fruit of the season abounds, including grapes fresh from the harvest, accompanied by robust cheeses and a loaf of warm bread. In the background, rolling vineyards prepare to give forth their bounty. According to Christensen, composing the piece so that each painting successfully carried the proper flow of motion, and then assembling the three pieces so that flow remained strong across all three was the most challenging part of this piece. Normally, he will start and finish one painting at a time. However, with this triptych it was required that he develop each piece simultaneously so that colors matched exactly and elements flowed perfectly. What is most amazing about this piece is that the three panels are designed to work side-by-side when hung horizontally, and top-to-bottom when hung vertically! Each ofthese wines comes from grapes grown on the estate – in combination with the abundant repast surely creates a “state of bliss”! An aged, gnarling oak branch frames a breathtaking view of the southern valley through a valance of leaves. The table top is adorned with acorn seedlings representing the native woodland circle-of-life in this world-renown wine region: from acorn to mighty oak tree; from oak tree to oak barrel – the guardian of the wine until it reaches maturity. A bottle of chardonnay, a bowl of farmer’s market fruit and a fresh loaf of crusty bread gives one pause to contemplate: This is indeed a “Flavorable Outlook.” Featured wine: Far Niente chardonnay

The new print work, “Floating With My Homies, “ was inspired by the beauty of compassion. It is part of the, ” Coconut Radio” series, created during much of the Covid period. During that time the word compassion was used quite often, so much that it seemed to take on additional, different and new meanings.

In 2012, I produced a work titled, “Rollin with the Homies”, which celebrated compassion resulting from the people around you. It went on to influence an entire exhibition in New York, in 2013 by the same title.

So, during the COVID period, I realized that it wasn’t just the limited people around us, but all of the people we dreamed would one day be around us again to feel that warmth of compassion. This is exactly what, “Floating With My Homies,” was meant to express.

The floatie, covered in a Tahitian motif to establish its location in the lagoon around my studio in Tahiti, is filled to the brim with my homies that I dreamed to one day float with again. Not only is the face of the character of Snoopy! covered in the excitement of the compassion, but the bright, yellow flame-like paint pours just above their heads expressing the warmth of the entire motion of compassion.

Just below the floatie off to the right side in the water of the lagoon sits a large paint pour of violet-purple hue a color that has been used throughout art history to represent passion and compassion.

LeRoy Neiman Soft Art Instead of painting with a brush, the artist paints with mod acrylic fibers and yarn. Each individual soft painting is the result of the collaborative effort of LeRoy Neiman and a trained staff of professional artists. The Artist’s pallet consists of specially dyed fabrics whose colors are vibrant and translucent. Each is signed by the artist and features his personal, signed certificate of authenticity. Once Mr. Neiman has chosen the colors that are the most appropriate for the particular image, each element is outlined in yarn. Fabrics are cut by hand and arranged layer by layer in a three- dimensional fashion. Each image may have as many as 40 pieces of fabric all in different overlapping colors. This layering creates a transparency similar to that of watercolor or acrylic washes. In addition to the mod acrylic fabric, dyed yarns of various thicknesses and weights of 100% wool are used to create the more intricate lines and stripes, giving the image added dimension. Once a specific area has been completed by this layering it is secured with a small handheld needle machine. Its 800 needles safely join the swatches together. Because every step of the process is executed by hand, 4-6 weeks are required to complete a single soft painting. The resulting work of art receives the same care the artist might lavish on a single canvas. This unique process requires no weaving or knotting. LeRoy Neiman has seized the rich possibilities of this process and brought to it the dynamic strengths of his own work – color, movement, and a tangible sense of space. Throughout the process, Mr. Neiman instructs and supervises the process and creation of each painting including painting finishing touches directly onto the fabric to assure complete accuracy of the image to its original oil precedent. After the image has been approved and readied in the New York studio, it is finished with the use of 50,000 needles which secure the fabric and yarn to a linen backing. This final step gives the soft painting a smooth textural quality while retaining its brilliant transparent colors and three-dimensionality. Just like serigraphs, these pieces are created by layering color on top of color to recreate the original work except in high quality fabrics which are dyed to LeRoy Neiman’s same specific color specifications as his oils. Only a few were made of each image as they are incredible laborious to produce and so are extremely rare. LeRoy Neiman (American, 1921-2012), 1989, soft art, felted wool tapestry, published by Art Renaissance Technology, New York, NY, copyright LeRoy Neiman Inc.
