Before the people who would attempt to tame it. And long before the stories they would attempt to tell each other about the land and the lives on it took shape. This land was here, and it was the home of the buffalo.Unlike any other place on the earth, the American landscape is both the setting and a character of its people's mythology. Its first, people call it mother. This who came after saw it as a never ending expanse to imagine endless possibilities. An they quickly filled that wide-open cavas with their stories. They first told tales about the land itself, later of explorers going into its unknown corners, the Frontiersmen clearing the way, pioneers, homesteaders, speculators, farmers, ranchers and cowboys, inventors and dreamers. The stories became all of ours, and they gave us an understanding of how we see ourselves. And they all happened in settings that we have embraced as our collective home. This is where the keen instincts of the artist Gabe Leonard finds a direct path to grabbing hold of us and our curiosity in a split second. The settings of this painting deliver to us the familiar landscape of our shared mythologies. We see these rolling hills blanketed with golden grass reaching out out far till it joins a sky just as epic. And we know immediately where we are. Even though its a place we've never actually been. Not having to slow down to understand the setting or even who the people are in it, means nothing slows down our attention to the moment we have been dropped into. We don't know what happened before this second, but we viscerally feel the energy. And we don't know what is next, but we are hungry to see it happen. -
